拍人物除了紀錄形貌外，最主要的是要希望能夠捕捉該人物獨特的性格和韻味，使人物照有生命的感覺。人物攝影有兩種，一種是人像照，像在攝影棚內，被攝者刻意擺出姿勢拍照，另一種是自然活動照，像拍新聞攝影，在被攝者不察覺的情况下，捕捉對方最自然的表情和動作。
不論是人像照，還是自然活動，都應表情自然，不要有生硬的感覺，流於作做。如果光線不夠或背光，可用閃光燈補光。用閃光燈時應啟用紅眼裝置，避免紅眼 red-eye。
陰天會形成柔和的光線，所以多雲的日子非常適合拍人像。還有人像攝影要尊重對方，先徵求對方的同意，不要只是拍了就走。
